UTAGAWA KUNISADA (also known as TOYOKUNI III) (1786–1864). A - Lot 31
UTAGAWA KUNISADA (also known as TOYOKUNI III) (1786–1864). A Kabuki theater scene. It is signed “Toyokuni ga” (豊国画—“drawn by Toyokuni”), a signature characteristic of the master Utagawa Kunisada (also known as Toyokuni III, 1786–1865). This is a portrait of actors (yakusha-e) in the midst of a theatrical performance. The red and blue cartouches in the background and foreground clearly identify the names of the characters on stage as well as the title of the play or act being performed. The work demonstrates the dynamism of the Utagawa school in the late Edo period, with its contrasting geometric kimono patterns (red checks, gold calligraphy on a black background) and the exaggerated facial expressions typical of Kabuki.
