UTAGAWA KUNISADA (also known as TOYOKUNI III) (1786–1864). T - Lot 35
UTAGAWA KUNISADA (also known as TOYOKUNI III) (1786–1864). Toyokuni ga (豊国画) in the red, gourd-shaped cartouche at the bottom right (the signature typically used by Kunisada after he adopted his master Toyokuni’s name in 1844). The circular red-and-black cartouche in the upper right indicates the title of the series: 星月夜(あるいは月夜の宴)— The Twelve Months / Full Moon Nights (or Moonlit Banquet). The inscribed text specifically identifies the twelfth month (十二月). The scene depicts a theatrical performance (Kabuki) or a genre scene from the Edo period. It features two women (one of whom is an elegant beauty, or bijin) interacting inside a room with an expressive, bald elderly man seated in the foreground, near a tray and a lit candle.
