KAWANABE KYOSAI (1831–1889). A satirical illustration publis - Lot 44
KAWANABE KYOSAI (1831–1889). A satirical illustration published in 1884, taken from an illustrated page of a Japanese woodblock-printed book titled “Kyōsai Suiga” (暁斎酔画), which can be translated as “Kyōsai’s Drunken Drawings .” Kawanabe Kyōsai (河鍋暁斎, 1831–1889), one of the most eccentric and virtuosic masters of the transition from the Edo to the Meiji era, was often called the “demon of drawing” for his boundless imagination and satirical humor. The first volume of this series was published in 1882 (Meiji 15) by the publisher Matsuzaki Hanzō.
