Henry-Raymond Fost (1905–1970) and Jenny Carré (1902–1945) w - Lot 600
Henry-Raymond Fost (1905–1970) and Jenny Carré (1902–1945) were an indispensable duo of costume and set designers who left a profound mark on the world of entertainment, musical theater, and French music hall during the interwar period. Already well-known by the 1920s, the designer and costume artist Jenny Carré took the young Henry-Raymond Fost under her wing beginning in 1930. He quickly became her closest collaborator in her studio. Together, they designed costumes for the capital’s most prestigious revues at legendary venues such as the Casino de Paris (notably for the 1938 productions of *Amours de Paris* and *Féerie de Paris*, starring Mistinguett and Maurice Chevalier). They collaborated with leading artistic directors such as Henri Varna. For example, they were responsible for designing the costumes for the famous production of *La Veuve joyeuse* presented at the Théâtre Mogador beginning in 1942, as well as for the play *Valses de France*. Costume sketch for “Mam’zelle Nitouche.” Under the direction of Jenny Carré, the operetta *Mam’zelle Nitouche* enjoyed a major revival at the Gaîté-Lyrique on March 23, 1935, featuring sumptuous sets and costumes designed based on her sketches (and with the support of Fost). Gouache, watercolor, graphite, and silver highlights with annotations. 24 x 32 cm.
